Challenge - 8's parte dos

A "use my tangle" diva challenge this week - 8's parte dos. Pretty.

Alright, confession time........ I'm actually a little scared of complicated dot grids - my dots go all over the place, I lose track of what I'm doing, etc, etc.......so, to be honest, I did not even attempt to draw this pattern using the instructions. Once I saw all those dots I had horrible flashbacks to my first attempts at Mi2 and promptly hid in my closet. It took John 2 days to coax me back out. I kid you not. O.k., yes, I am kidding. It was only 1 day.

Because I love the look of these patterns, and still want to draw them well, I like find ways that work for me and suit the loose, flowing drawing style that I (mostly) prefer to do. My approach is to look at the pattern as a "whole", break it down into shapes and once I understand how those shapes work together, I  just draw it out from there. 8's parte dos initially pared back to x's and +'s for me, and keeping these shapes in mind meant I could keep track of what I was doing. This probably doesn't make a lot of sense, but it works for me.

Here's what I came up with:

This one is a little looser and my favourite of the two.

It is always so much fun to see your work. I love the high contrast of the first onealong with the way the ends extend. Your second is just so wonderfully airy. Beautiful works!
Enjoy that your mind works in different ways. What you come up with is always so creative and beautiful. You use what works for you.

I come here to your blog specifically because I am SUCH a "grid" girl who had no experience doodling a curve that looked like a curve. Watching you and your work is teaching my brain to see things in a more shape-based framework. And honestly that evolution is brain neuro-synapse knitting at its best! Thank you for making your work and your process available to us all!
Both are absolutely gorgeous!!

As usual, your work just blows me away. Each one of these is beautiful in its own way. It's hard to pick one over the other.

Absolutely wonderful! Both are beautiful, but I love swirly, flowing lines, so the second is my favorite as well. I agree with Alice, I wish you could teach your technique.

Just stunning, so love your style. Bet the inside of your cupboard is filled with amazing sketches - well you would have to take a pen in there with you.

Helen, I love all your work. Just learning to do tangles myself and your's are so soft in color. What kind of grey markers or pens are you using? I can't seem to find anything in that color.
Helen said…
Hi, Ollie. Thanks :) I use Letraset tria markers - the come in cool, warm, neutral and ice grey each "colour" has 10 markers making it easy to do graduated shading. Unfortunately, Letraset have phased out the refills for these markers, so when I am done with my current batch I'll be looking for an alternative - possibly copics.
