Flips Folds Ribbon and String e-book is here!

Flips folds ribbon and string is now ready! At last! Finally! It is here!
Almost a month later than I had planned, but it is done! Woohoo! (Just in time before I ran out of my yearly quota of exclamation marks, too!!)  I’m super-happy with it (though, I must say, this is mixed in with a huge dose of terror).

If you just want to race right ahead and buy it without going any further (my kind of person), go right ahead.

Otherwise, I’ve got a little video for you – try not to be too scared, but in it you are going to see not just my hands, but, yep, my face, too (gasp!). I wanted to give everyone the opportunity to see how the book is set out and what it includes because, in my experience, e-books can sometimes be a bit of an unknown factor, you can’t look through them the way you can at the bookstore - and, admittedly, I’ve been disappointed a time or two. The last thing I would want would be for you guys to purchase the book expecting something totally different from what it is.

So, here it is – the Flips, Folds, Ribbon and String book preview.

Flips, Folds, Ribbon and String is the culmination of the technique questions that have kept cropping up on the blog. These are the ones that take more than a quick step out to explain.

I had initially thought of putting together a series of online workshops, but really wanted something a bit more lasting with lots of visuals, than a workshop would be able to provide. So, instead the focus of Flips, Folds, Ribbon and String became an e-book with video support. The videos are in my usual laid-back format similar to the pattern videos I’ve done previously and cover most of the techniques (and a few extra) featured in the e-book.

What’s inside
Flips, Folds, Ribbon and String is a 53 page digital e-book in PDF format. It's divided into 4 main sections, each including:
* Technique step-outs
* Tips
* Gallery inspiration
* Video tutorials (1.25 hours in total)

There is an interactive Table of Contents (see image here) allowing you to navigate throughout the book along with hyperlinks that will take you directly to the video content.

My goal for this book is to share with you my techniques for drawing Flips, Folds, Ribbon and String – breaking them down and making it easier to understand so that you can put these processes to work in your own drawings. I’ve used lots of step-outs, alternative approaches, tips and finished drawings to illustrate my techniques. At the end of each chapter is a gallery with 4-7 completed drawings to help inspire your own creations.

And, as we all learn best in different ways, the supporting videos have been created to demonstrate many of the how-to techniques featured through the book first hand. The best of both worlds, I think!
Flips Folds Ribbon and String only US$15.00.

  3. I am definitely planning on getting his book...am a loyal follower of your blog posts.
    I have never ever done an e-book. I can see that I purchase it and then I download and print the 50+ pages, is that how it goes? Then it's my choice if I want it bound or not...I could take it somewhere and have that done. Right? OR I could keep the book on my computer, is that an option. Or do I do both. You speak about "interactive" links which require, of course, being on the computer. You talk about the many videos available. You have to be online or you have to copy the links to your computer to get these? This will be my first e-book so you need to instruct people HOW this works. You can't assume we all know what e-books ARE!

    1. An electronic book (variously: e-book, eBook, e-Book, ebook, digital book, or even e-edition) is a book-length publication in digital form, consisting of text, images, or both, readable on computers or other electronic devices.[1] Although sometimes defined as "an electronic version of a printed book",[2] many e-books exist without any printed equivalent. Commercially produced and sold e-books are usually intended to be read on dedicated e-book readers, however, almost any sophisticated electronic device that features a controllable viewing screen, including computers, many mobile phones, and all smartphones can also be used to read e-books.

    3. Hi Ginny and Lynda :)

      I'm sorry, but I did not even think about the fact that some people may not know what an e-book is - I've spent too many years online! I will have to put some information up under the book tab later today.

      Basically an e-book is a digital version of a book. The format I have used for mine is a PDF. If you received my Pattern Folio it is exactly the same format - it's a document that you can read on your computer, or put it on a tablet (ipad, etc) if you have one. You do not need a dedicated e-book reader, as you can open up right on your computer. You will need to have a PDF reader such as Adobe Reader that will open it - more than likely this is already on your computer, but it is a free download if not (http://get.adobe.com/reader/).

      Basically it is a way to produce a portable, easily delivered book without a publisher. You get it right away. If you want to print the book you can - just run a test page first in case you need to make any adjustments to sizing, etc - personally I think it is just as easy to keep it in e-book format, but my computer is close to where I draw and I also love the portability of having the books on my ipad.

      The interactive table of contents simply means that in digital format you can click on the table of contents and it will take you to that spot in the book. I love this about e-books and get frustrated when they don't have them. The videos work the same way - you will click on the link in the book and it will take you to the video.

      I hope this helps. Please send me an email if you need any more info :)
      Helen

  7. Congratulations on your new book, it's brilliant! I'm going to go and buy it right now.

    Have you given some thought to having a place for people to post their work? There are lots of options depending on your preference... Flickr, Pinterest, Facebook, etc.

    1. Thanks, Genevieve. I hope that you find it really useful :)

      I had not even had an inkling of a thought of that - what a terrific idea. I've gotten some great suggestions and feedback today that have got me thinking outside my box. LOL. I tend to get tunnel vision when I am working on a project and that is all I see. I will have to have a think as to how I could the group idea work. Thank you!

  8. I LOVE my copy of the book. Definitely would tell other people to get it, especially if they're like I am. I'm fairly new to tangling, and I don't follow all the rules. I've never considered myself an artist, but I love the stuff that flows from my pen now. To me the best part of the book, and something I really didn't think of when deciding not to follow the rules... go ahead and USE the pencil. And then erase things. Seriously, that never occurred to me!! And looking at your new book and trying some of the little things (too timid to do bigger ones just yet) is like having you sitting with me at the kitchen table here, helping me. :-D

  11. WOW...and...WOW, again!!! I'm totally impressed with what I've seen as I flipped through your e-book and watched all the videos!!! I really appreciate the videos as I'm more of a visual learner and watching you create makes it all come together for me. The videos are well worth the price of the book on their own...the whole purchase has been money well spent! Thank you for all the time you spent putting together the book and the videos!!!!

    1. Thank you, Barb! I think having the video back up is important as it is often quite amazing what we pick up subliminally by watching someone demonstrate - little tips and techniques that the person may not even realise they are doing - it gets tucked away in our brain and helps with being able to replicate it. So glad you are finding it helpful :)

  14. I purchased your book today and love it!!!!! I printed it 2up per page and single sided so that I can make notes on the back as I work on the beautiful designs. I punched two holes in the top and ran a ribbon through to make a little book. I put your first book, Pattern Folio, on top and the new book after...I truly enjoy your instruction and have learned more from you that the many zentangle books I have purchased!!!

    1. Thank you, Felicia! Great idea to keep it one sided for notes and sketches. Do you find 2 on a page big enough to read? I will have to print some up and see. I hope you get lots of fun out of it :)

    2. For me it is big enough to read and with my tablet or laptop near I can always go into the digital copy to zoom in on any items I need a closer look at and also take advantage of the videos you so kindly made that are such a great tool. If you are using it as your main source and not planning to use the computer much, than I would recommend printing at full size to get the most detail that is easier on the eyes.

    3. I love the idea of having it in a nice, compact format. I often use my iPad v my computer for looking at digital images - so much easier to zoom in on the details. hx
